Fusion 6-8 - September Parent Information

Dear AVS Fusion Middle Families,

Thank you for registering your child(ren) for Fusion at AVS.  We are going to enjoy our summer holidays but are looking forward to September, meeting our new students and welcoming back our returning students.

Fusion Middle School teachers return on Tuesday, September 8 and will be available to respond to inquiries at that time.

Thursday, September 10 we will be hosting a New Parent/Student Orientation session at 4:00pm followed by a Meet the Teacher night with pizza at 5-6 pm!   If you are new to AVS Middle School, the New Parent/Student Orientation session is very important.

Our first official day of classes is Tuesday, September 15, starting with a welcome assembly at 9:00 a.m. in the gym. Students should go directly to the gym and will be assigned temporary classes following the assembly. We’ll have a full day of school, including a hot dog lunch for students.   Vegetarian and gluten-free options will be available. Dismissal is at 2:00 p.m.

Tentative Block Schedule (there may be some changes to this schedule)

On-Site Classes:

In-Person ELA: English Language Arts is taught in person to reduce the amount of at-home online coursework. Lessons will be delivered in person, with some homework required.  We have a new teacher, Mrs. McNeil, joining us this year to teach English Language Arts.

Math Tutorial Block: Students will receive targeted support as they work through their online math course.

Media Design: Students will participate in a media design class with Mr. Carpenter as part of their Applied Design Skills and Technology course.

Technology Class: Students will participate in a technology class with Mr. Amendt where they will do activities like: coding, 3D printing and robotics (to name a few!)

Art: Students will participate in Arts Education once a week with Mrs. Esau

PE: Students will participate in a Physical Education class once a week with Mrs. Esau.  The goal of this PE class is to have fun and be active.  Participation is expected!  Students are not required to change for PE but need to come prepared to be active in comfortable clothing with appropriate footwear.

Wednesday Work Block (9:00–11:00 a.m.): Students can attend this work block to receive teacher support in their online courses and face to face classes.

Indigenous Support Block: Tuesday, 2-3:00

September 16, 23, 30: New students will participate in a Brightspace Bootcamp, learning how to navigate online courses, OneDrive, submit work, and build digital literacy.

On-Line Courses:

Social Studies: Mrs. Esau                    Career Education: Mrs. Esau
Math: Mr. Amendt                                      Science: Mr. Amendt
French: Mrs. Baerg

Teacher news: Jen Esau will be taking a part-time Educational Leave of Absence again this year to take courses to pursue a Professional Master of Education degree. This means she will still be teaching in the Fusion program and at school Tuesday through Thursday but will not be teaching ELA.  Mrs. Janet McNeil will be joining the Middle School team next year to teach English Language Arts.  It’s going to be great!

Please see this Fusion 6-8 Supply List and Computer Specs for your information.

Wishing you a relaxing and enjoyable summer!
